Manchester United have appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their caretaker manager, the Premier League club have confirmed.Solskjaer succeeds Jose Mourinho in the Old Trafford hot seat following the Portuguese’s sacking on Tuesday.The Red Devils legend joins from Molde to take up his position with United, signing a contract until the end of the 2018/19 season.

Mike Phelan, a United assistant under Sir Alex Ferguson, returns to the club to work with Solskjaer, alongside current coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.Solskjaer said: “Manchester United is in my heart and its brilliant to be coming back in this role. Solskjaer’s appointment appeared to be confirmed by mistake on Tuesday evening, but the page was later deleted from Manchester United’s website.The 45-year-old spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford as a player, scoring 126 goals for the club.His most famous moment was scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final, which confirmed Manchester United as England’s first ever – and still only – Treble winners.The leaked confirmation of Solskjaer’s appointment was a video of his goal against Bayern Munich, with a caption reading: “Solskjaer becomes our interim manager, 20 seasons after clinching the Treble with THAT goal at Camp Nou…”2

He also represented Molde and the Norway national team, before hanging up his boots in 2007 and beginning his coaching career with United’s reserves the following year.Molde handed Solskjaser his first senior management position in 2011, and after winning two Norwegian league titles and the domestic cup he was hired by Cardiff.His spell in Wales is largely viewed as a disaster, with the Bluebirds relegated from the Premier League under his tutelage. Solskjaer left Cardiff early the following season with the club 17th in the Championship table.2
