Tottenham Hotspur transfer news: Five possible Toby Alderweireld replacements for Spurs
For numerous transfer windows now, there has been speculation Belgian central defender Toby Alderweireld could be on his way out of Tottenham. These rumours have been dragged to the top of the gossip columns once again after the club activated his one-year contract extension.Due to Spurs exercising the option though, there is now a release clause which could see Alderweireld leave for just 25million.
6Alderweireld has long been linked with a move to Manchester UnitedAlderweireld has been a first team regular since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015 playing 135 times for the North London club.If the 29-year-old does decide to leave, who can replace him that will come at a reasonable price?
Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax)
6Matthijs de Ligt was of four Dutch players on the Golden Boy Award shortlist for 2018At 19-years-old, Matthijs de Ligt is one of the most recognisable young names in both in the Netherlands and in Europe.Currently at Ajax, De Ligt has been linked with a whole host of names off of the back of an impressive 2017/18 season where he was voted into the Dutch team of the season and won the 2018 Golden Boy Award, coming top of 100 candidates.Officially named the best under-21 player in Europe, the Dutchman has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. He fits the bill perfectly for Mauricio Pochettino, De Ligt is a ball playing centre half that can command a defence – something Spurs will lack if they do lose Alderweireld. He wouldn’t come cheap and Spurs would more than likely have to break the bank with De Ligt having a market value of around 65million.Owner Daniel Levy is used to dealings with Ajax though which could smooth things over. They spent 42million on Colombian defender Davidson Sanchez from the Dutch club in 2017, and also sign superstars Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen from them.
Joris Gnagnon (Sevilla)
6Gnagnon recently moved to Spanish side Sevilla who are third in the La Liga tableThe Ivory Coast central defender is considered relatively small in his position at 6ft tall, but makes up for it in his ability to get back at pace as well as his reading of the game.Spanish side Sevilla completed the signing of Gnagnon at the start of the season but he has failed to break into a side who, with big investment in the summer, currently sit third, above Real Madrid, in LaLiga. The 21-year old has only made 10 appearances all season, and only had two league starts. His lack of game time doesn’t deter from the fact he is one of Europe’s hottest properties and he still possesses the potential to be a success story under the guidance of Pochettino at Spurs.
Unai Nunez (Athletic Bilbao):
6Nunez, 21, has a market value of 12.5millionAnother born in the year 1997, Nunez is described by Bilbao as an ‘old fashioned central defender’ who came up through their youth system playing for Spanish Segunda Division side Bilbao Athletic 33 times.Nunez scored three goals for the Spanish B team set-up and has now gone on to represent the La Liga side on 42 occasions.Bilbao are renowned for being defensively strong, having produced world class defenders like Aymeric Laporte, who joined Manchester City for 57million and won the Premier League title in the same season. If Alderweireld leaves, and Pochettino decides to stick with a pairing of Davidson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen, Nunez would be a more than suitable third choice and potential starter in seasons to come.
Christian Kabasele (Watford):
6Kabasele has been linked with a move away from the HornetsAnother Belgian to Tottenham perhaps? Nothing has been linked as of yet but Christian Kabasele is one of many players to step up this season for Watford.Javi Gracia’s team, who are eighth in the Premier League, have had a few stand out players this season with Kabasele and Abdoulaye Doucoure both being linked with moves to Chelsea and PSG respectively. The centre-back has made 15 appearances this season, but due to an injury picked up midway through the festive period against Chelsea, has been missing since Boxing DayBack in 2017, team-mate and defender Adrian Mariappa, praised Kabasele insisting he had the ability to go far in his career.“He’s had a little run and he’s thriving,” said Mariappa. “You can see how well he’s playing and he’s got all the attributes to be a real top player, especially in this league.”
Mats Hummels (Bayern Munich):
6Hummels has had a frustrating relationship with Niko KovacPerhaps a long shot, but there are rumours Bayern Munich’s German World Cup winner Mats Hummels is seeking a move to the Premier League.Reports from the Mirror suggest that Hummels has fallen out of favour with manager Niko Kovac, who prefers a defensive pairing of Jerome Boateng and Niklas Sule. The 30-year old has only featured nine times this season, being left out of the squad all together against Bayer Leverkusen at the start of the season. It is thought that Hummels’ agent Marc Kosicke has travelled to London for proposed talks with officials from both Chelsea and Tottenham. It is not a signing that would be top of Pochettino’s plans, as he is older than the majority of Tottenham’s transfer targets, but he does possess the qualities needed with his ability to play vertically. His experiences with Bayern and Germany could really boost their title challenge too.
