Chelsea’s days of winning trophies have come to an end, according to Liverpool legend Graeme Souness.The Blues are now sixth in the Premier League, a point behind Manchester United and three behind fourth place Arsenal.2

Maurizio Sarri’s side failed to take advantage of their game in hand to close the gap on the teams above them, drawing 1-1 with Wolves earlier this month before suffering a further setback at Everton on Sunday. Chelsea have won 15 major honours since 2003 – the year Roman Abramovich bought the west London club – and they only narrowly lost this season’s EFL Cup final to Manchester City, and the Blues are favourites to win the Europa League.However, Souness believes trophies are not on the horizon for the Blues.“It’s difficult times ahead for Chelsea,” Souness said on Sky Sports.

“I think there’s a big sea change in how they see things going forward. I don’t think they will be winning trophies in the immediate future.”The former Liverpool captain also questioned the balance of Chelsea’s midfield and feels they rely too heavily on Eden Hazard to be their difference maker.He added: “You take Eden Hazard out of the equation and where’s the threat coming from?“They have a midfield that is made up of (N’Golo) Kante, who is a fabulous player but doesn’t really get goals, and Jorginho, who has two goals this season, and (Ross) Barkley. They don’t get goals. The mix is totally wrong.2

“If you insist on playing Jorginho, who is neat and tidy but not a goal threat, you have to have goal threats on either side of him. You can’t rely on Hazard to do it week in, week out, it’s too much for him. You have to share the goals around.”Finally, Souness hit out at manager Sarri’s preferred style of play, which was labelledSarriball during the Italian’s time in charge of Napoli.The possession-heavy approach worked brilliantly in Serie A, but it has proven to be something of a busted flush since Sarri moved to English football.“Chelsea dismay me,” Souness continued. “They must be wonderful in five-a-side. Ping, ting, ting, great. Two-thirds possession, twice as many passes, touches, lose 2-0. If you have that much of the ball where are you having it?“They’re playing like a five-a-side team, the stats show it. Chelsea have had more passes in their own half than anyone else.”
