Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes Divock Origi‘s late winner in their victory over Everton on Sunday is the end of a long and hard chapter of the striker’s career.Origi’s stoppage-time header handed the Reds a 1-0 victory on derby day, taking advantage of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford spilling Virgil van Dijk’s sliced effort back into play.3

Liverpool remain two points behind Manchester City after Origi’s winner

The Belgian was an unlikely match-winner as he only came on in the 84th minute and has really struggled to feature in the first team over the last two years.A big reason for Origi’s decline is due to an injury he sustained during Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Everton in April 2016 – the Belgian being victim to a nasty challenge by ex-Toffee Ramiro Funes Mori.3

It was a tackle that outraged many Liverpool fans at the time and some Kopites on Twitter took the opportunity to praise Origi for exorcising his demons after Sunday’s game.

And while Klopp did not make a direct reference to Funes Mori, the German said the injury sustained by Origi had a hugely negative impact on his career.Klopp said: “I said to him [Origi] on the side of the pitch. I had it in my mind and have never forgotten since then.“Fouls happen and even harsh tackles happen but in his case it was so obvious that it was a break in his development because at that time he was outstanding.3

“After that he needed a long time before he felt nothing. Somehow he made the squad for the 2016 Europa League final.“He was an unbelievable threat at that time. He had speed and was physically strong.“And coming on tonight he can finish that chapter and from now on everything will be fine again.”
